This program is funded in part through an Neighbors In Action (NIA) grant facilitated by the City of Rochester. A discount on the equipment was provided by Mayer Paint & Hardware.
Program Description
UMNA will distribute up to 25 emergency home fire extinguishers to the senior citizens and tenants located in the Upper Monroe neighborhood area. <MAP LINK>
The intended beneficiaries of this program donโt always have the time or money to obtain a home fire extinguisher that meets current safety regulations. Many times extinguishers that have long expired are present but itโs not clear they will work or work safely when the moment of crisis arises. UMNA will partner with the RFD to help identify those in need of this program, raise awareness of the importance of home fire extinguishers and provide guidance for their care and use.
NIA, pronounced "NEE-uh," offers small grants, up to $10,000 each, empowering residents to come together and take purposeful action toward strengthening and improving their neighborhoods.
The initiative is based on Neighbors Building Neighborhoods (NBN), begun in 1996 by former Rochester Mayor William A. Johnson Jr. NBN was recognized nationally as a model for government and civic partnerships that inspired and supported hundreds of projects across the city that ranged from beautification initiatives to enhanced public safety.
