Monroe Avenue is WELCOMING

The UMNA multi-year Monroe Avenue revitalization effort is comprised of seven goals. The goals are expressed with aspirational language; language that describes the future we want to see.

People traveling along Monroe Avenue and visiting destinations in our area can see they are in neighborhood and feel the sense of a friendly, welcoming community.


1. Neighborhood signs and community gardens announce and celebrate our neighborhood inviting engagement with our community and our businesses

Action beginning in 2024

  • Our community gardens are beautiful and well maintained by committed volunteers from the Upper Monroe neighborhood and others.

Time frame: Ongoing. Spring cleanup and prep by May 1st; Summer maintenance schedule in place by June 1st; Fall preparation for winter by October 31st

  • Evaluate neighborhood signs on Monroe Avenue. If these signs require repair or replacement, research options and establish work group(s) to accomplish the work

Time frame: Sign evaluation to be completed by May 1, 2024.

UPDATE: Cosmetic work will be completed on both signs in 2024 by neighborhood volunteers. Replacement of the sign at Engel Place will be considered later in 2024 or early in 2025.

2. Everyone experiences a warm and welcoming atmosphere on Monroe Avenue

Action beginning in 2024

  • Reach out to businesses along Monroe Avenue to encourage opportunities to connect with neighbors and the public at large. This effort will include encouraging businesses on Monroe in our area to join and participate in the .

Time frame: Outreach to businesses to be completed by May 1, 2024.

  • Encourage our residents to stop by businesses to say hello and patronize those businesses.

Time frame: Engagement with residents will be ongoing. Primarily, this will a communications effort accomplished through our newsletter, social media and word-of-mouth.
